Inspired by the dedicated leadership of the Jacob Bond I’On
family during the early years of South Carolina’s history, The I’On Trust was
founded as a nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect neighbors with
their community by providing cultural and civic activities and promote
volunteerism. Funding comes from memberships and real estate transfer fees built
into the covenants, conditions and restrictions of the neighborhood, as well as
from event ticket sales and corporate sponsorships. Membership
is open to those who live in I'On as well as others who wish to participate in
our activities and support our work.
Programs throughout the year include events such as a
winter jazz event, the
Bridge Run Concert featuring the Blue Dogs, a spring garden tour and sculpture
exhibit, and a Holiday Tour of Homes. Other Trust activities include
family-oriented holiday celebrations at Halloween and July 4th outdoor movies,
our lecture series, and quarterly Adopt-A-Highway clean-ups.
In addition, to the above and other "Trust-produced"
programming, we also provide funding to other groups for activities consistent
with our mission. These "Trust-supported" organizations include I'Onissimo (brass, woodwinds, strings
and a chorus, each of which offers free performances twice a year), the
Community of I'On Artists, the I'On Conservation Corps, and others.
Currently, the Trust is making a committed push in the
community to to involve more people as volunteers in planning and executing our
programming. More volunteers means more excitement about upcoming events, and
volunteering is a terrific way to get to know your neighbors. Phil Ayers is
heading up our Volunteerism Task Force focusing on this issue. See other website pages for more
information.
